About the author/illustrator
and the little girl in the book...
Katie Chalmers, author and illustrator of this
book, is also a Celiac. She is a freelance graphic
designer who dedicated over two years to
creating this book, which she hopes will impact
awareness and increased understanding of
this condition.
Katie created this valuable resource to help
children — along with all of the other people in
their lives — to truly understand Celiac disease,
how it affects the body and why a gluten-free
diet, family support and positive attitudes are
all essential. The need for awareness and for
children’s resources, along with her daughter’s
diagnosis, is what lead to the idea for this book...
The author began work on the book when one of
her twin daughters was diagnosed with Celiac in
2008, a few months after she was diagnosed
herself. Right away, her doctor had told her that
there was a good chance that one or both of her
girls would also have Celiac. She decided then
and there to keep all talk of it positive, and to
figure out how to explain it to them in a way they
could understand.
The author's inspiration for the little girl in the
book was her daughter Morgan, a "Silent Celiac"
since she had no major, outward symptoms at
diagnosis. Morgan and her twin sister, Lindsey,
were both tested for Celiac after their Mom
was diagnosed, but only Morgan tested positive.
Thankfully she has embraced the diet since day
one, and her sister has been a wonderful
supporter for them both. (Sidenote: In May of
2011 Lindsey was diagnosed with gluten
sensitivity and is also on a GF diet now, too).
Nature lovers all, a park in autumn seemed the
perfect setting for this book...
Their hope is that this book (and website) will
help many others to see the sunny side of life
throughout their gluten-free journeys.
